01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Tucked along Senzoku-dori in the quiet area north of Senso-ji temple, Nakajima is an unpretentious neighborhood eatery where locals and workers arriving after work slide open the door as evening sets in. While bearing the sign of a traditional set-meal diner (teishoku-ya), the extensive offerings posted along the walls reflect the spirit of a true neighborhood pub, with an appetizing range spanning seafood, fried specialties, small drinking snacks, and hearty rice dishes.

Those looking to unwind can pair a chilled Sapporo Akaboshi or draft beer with fresh seafood and thoughtfully prepared small plates. The three-piece sashimi platter, featuring tuna, white fish, and cockle (torigai), alongside the three-piece shellfish assortment with ark shell and scallops, are staple accompaniments that showcase raw seafood at its best. Lighter plates like octopus in vinegar and scallions with sweet miso (wakegi nuta) sit alongside warming dishes such as slow-simmered beef offal stew and sake-steamed asari clams, ideal for lingering over a flask of sake.

From Signature Omurice to Fried Fare and Hearty Soups

Diners arriving with an appetite will find plenty of satisfying mains and rice specialties. The mixed fried assortment combines horse mackerel, prawn, and squid in crisp panko breading, served with a simple salad—equally suited as a meal center or paired with drinks. The widely loved omurice arrives with ketchup over a neatly folded omelette, enveloping fragrant fried rice in a delightfully nostalgic style. Breaded pork katsudon and chicken-and-egg oyakodon simmered in sweet-savory broth, as well as comforting bowls of asari clam or nameko mushroom miso soup, round out the warm, home-style menu.

Nakajima is open from 17:30 in the late afternoon until 22:00 at night, closing on Thursdays. The dining room accommodates solo diners stopping by for an evening drink as well as groups gathering at table seats, with reservations accepted. Payment is cash-only, so diners should prepare yen before visiting.
